This study looks at the life of David Patrick Moran (D.P.Moran)(1869-1936) and his weekly paper The Leader.
Moran has attracted scholarly attention as an aggressive and articulate exponent of a Catholic Gaelic vision of Irish identity, summed up in his slogans 'Irish Ireland' and 'The Gael must be the element that absorbs'.
Such analyses usually concentrate on his early manifesto The Philosophy of Irish Ireland. But no attempt has been made to work through Moran's articles in The Leader recorded over a period of thirty five years.
Patrick Maume gives us an insight into Moran's life and projects, how far he succeeded and whether he failed.
