Bainneann an scéal seo le Contae Mhaigh Eo sa Bhliain 1798, 'bliain na bhFrancach', nuair a tháinig arm Franach faoin Ghinearál Hunbert i dtír i gCill Ala. Bhuaigh an leabhar seo na príomhduaiseanna liteartha, ina measc Bonn an Chraoibhin. L'Attaque recounts the oart played by a small group of United Irishmen from County Leitrin in the military revolt which was sparked by the landing of the French General Humbert in Killala, County Mayo in 1798.

The central character is Mayoman Máirtín Dubh Caomhánach, who at the beginning of the novel is content to eke out a peasent existence with his adored new wife Saidhbhín.When news arrives that the French have landed ("Tá do cháride i gCill Ala!"), Máirtín, like the mythical heroes of old, feels under compulsion (faoi geasa) to join the revolt. Through the character of Máirtín, Ó Tuairisc's novel brilliantly charts the effect of revolutionary fighting on peasant life, the conflicting ideals of the comrades-at-arms and the disorganisation that afflicts their army. Strongly influenced by Tolstoy's War and Peace, L'Attaque is an unflinching portrayal of the inhumanity of war, making ironic use of Irish heroic myths that glorify conflict.
