Declan Colley recounts the rise and fall and rise again of Bobby Beasley. Bobby was a champion jockey having won a Cheltenham Gold Cup, a Champion Hurdle and a Grand National by the age of 26. But along the way he succumbed to alcoholism.
But it is also the story of a horse called Captain Christy, a headstrong and difficult horse. He was described as a free horse and a handful for anyone to ride. A good friend of Bobby's Nicky Rackard urged him to join the AA, where he began to face his internal demons. Pat Taafe, a trainer, showed faith in Bobby and paired him Captain Christy.
And thus began a remarkable partnership culminating in horse and rider winning the 1974 Cheltenham Gold Cup. A great read for horse racing lovers.
