This book is a republished and updated edition of the bestselling book, Fr John Murphy of Boolavogue 1753-1798 by Nicholas Furlong, first published thirty years ago (1991).

It makes the complex events of the 1798 Rebellion accessible to everyone with an interest in the history of Ireland and in an event which cost an estimated 30,000 lives. There are specially executed maps of the Rebellion in Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wicklow and the European theatre of conflict, 100 more pages than the previous edition and 114 photographs that include the site of Fr Murphy’s homestead, Vinegar Hill and other battle sites of the Rebellion, the rebel leaders and the leaders of the English Crown forces, and monuments and commemorations in 1938, 1948 and 1998.

Nicholas Furlong, FRSAI, agricultural journalist, newspaper columnist, historian and lecturer is author of 19 books which include the best-sellers, Diarmait King of Leinster, A Hurling Decade, Young Farmer Seeks Wife, The Women of 1798 and the series County Wexford in the Rare Old Times in five volumes of black and white photographs of events and personalities from the 1850s to the 1980s.

'Nicholas Furlong’s distinguished essay offers a careful reassessment of someone who was the least likely of any other priest in the county to appear in arms and one whose initial involvement in the rebellion was quite accidental but whose subsequent leadership – alone among all the rebel leaders, North and South – proved formidable.'  Dr Thomas Bartlett, M.R.I.A.
