Although the famine of the 1840's is one of the central events in modern Irish history, relatively little has been written directly on this subject in recent years.
This books is not a comprehensive history of the famine-such a work would require considerably greater time and space-rather it attempts to re-examine the event in the light of current thinking on nineteenth century Irish economy and society.
