The MacCarthy clan held a powerful position in Munster until late in the 17th century.
They controlled a lot of land and many castles. From the 18th century onward, the Mac Carthys were less important as land owners, but they made important contributions to many fields of endeavor not only in Ireland but also in other countries where they had settled.
