This work concentrates on the relationship of Fr David O'Hanlon Walsh with the tenants of the marquis of Ely on the Hook estate and his leadership of them in their agitation.

The roles of his brother, Nicholas, who was imprisoned under the Protection of Person and Property Act, and his sister, Mary Anne, who stepped into the breach when she was most needed, are examined.
