This is the story of a personal journey, in which the author undertook seven years of training as a Christian Brother in Ireland in the 1950s, only to suffer severe doubts, and finally to leave the order.

In detailing his experiences, the author creates a character who illustrates the dilemmas and challenges faced by a great number of people, and which reflect many of the challenges and difficulties that have shaped the Ireland of today.
