This is the personal story of Nan Joyce, traveller.

This is the personal story of Nan Joyce, traveller.

It is the story of a girl born into poverty and orphaned in her early teens who has developed into a proud and independent spokesperson for her people.

She tells the story of her own family, of idyllic days camped near Downpatrick, of the beauty of the countryside, of horsefairs and marriage customs, campfire gatherings and story-telling and of hardships endured especially during the terrible year her father died.

Nearly destitute her mother went out to steal scrap, was caught and sent to prison. Nan and her brothers and sisters were left to survive alone.
