The song of wandering Aengus is one of William Butler Yeats' most beautiful lyrics. It tells the story of a love fleetingly experienced and lost forever.

The poem was inspired by Maud Gonne, a passionate young Irish revolutionary with whom Yeats fell hopelessly in love. Repeatedly rejected by her, he turned to ancient Irish mythology to find expression for his loss and yearning.

By giving voice to his most personal emotions in the age-old story of Aengus, the young Yeats crafted a poem that continues to speak to us today.

In this reinterpretation in picturebook form, Marina Marcolin's ethereal watercolours evoke the timeless feelings of lost love expressed in Yeats' poem.
