The characters in the story are members of Anglican, Presbyterian and catholic families and the novel represents their attitudes and influences of the eras in which they lived.

It is a story of great anger, of hatred, of savage fighting intermingled with softer episodes, romance and individual acts of generosity.

Above all this is a story which endeavours to explain the attitudes and outlook of unionism and nationalism in Ulster.
