The Rotunda is one of Dublin's great institutions, nowadays functioning as a maternity and teraching hospital, formerly also a major center of entertainment in the city. The complex comprised the Hospital, Assembly Rooms and Gardens, all conceived on a grand scale.

Set up by Bartholomew Mosse, the Rotunda was a public charity whereby the leisure activities of the wealthy supported the Hospital for the poor. In this fascinating and well illustrated history of the early years of this magnificent institution, the authors detail the setting up of the Rotunda, its architecture and decoration, the musical entertainment, and the problems of childbirth at the time.
