Maynooth Philosophical Papers is the academic journal of the Philosophy Department at Maynooth University. Since 2002 it has published a wide range of articles and translations in the history of philosophy, including medieval and Renaissance thought and contemporary Continental philosophy. Since 2018, it is published in cooperation with the Philosophy Documentation Center in the US.

The journal is published biennially.

Volume 10 (2020) contains a special section on Augustine’s Confessions, Book XI, where Augustine asks the question of what it means that God creates by speaking. What does such a claim entail for the nature of language? How can God speak if he does not exist in time? In addition to a long essay by John Milbank, essays by William Desmond and Philipp Rosemann address these issues.

Three other articles round off the issue: a piece by Mette Lebech and the late Fr James McEvoy on human dignity; an article by the American bioethicist Jeffrey Bishop; and an essay by Philip Gonzales on violence and Christian revelation.
