This is a bittersweet tale of a girl trapped between two worlds, juxtaposed with a woman struggling to make peace with her past.

As a young girl Alice Carey came to realise that ‘home’ can mean different things. Raised in New York by Kerry immigrants in search of a better life, Alice sometimes visited Ireland with her mother, travelling steerage on ocean liners. The radical contrast between 1960s rural Ireland and cosmopolitan Manhattan caused confusion and conflict.

Many years later, in a blast of middle-age madness, fashion icon Alice and her husband fell in love with an abandoned Georgian farmhouse in west Cork. As they restored its stables, Alice unearthed disturbing childhood memories played out in wildly divergent homes in New York City, Fire Island and Killarney. This is a bittersweet tale of a girl trapped between two worlds, juxtaposed with a woman struggling to make peace with her past.

Alice Carey started her first diary at age ten. Writing daily ever since, she has several plays, essays and articles to her credit. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, she volunteered for Gay Men’s Health Crisis – work that changed her life. She worked as a waitress, substitute teacher, actress and model. She’s in her sixties now and will make her film debut in 2016 in The Surf Report.
