1980 1st Edition Hardback. Dust jacket slightly scuffed
This book contains fourteen essays written by J.M. Synge around the turn of the 19th century. Most of the essays were originally published in the Manchester Guardian, and in The Shanachie, an irish literary magazine published in the 1900s. The essays were first collected and published as a book in 1910 by Maunsel and Co in Dublin, the year after Synge's death. After numerous reprint in that decade the books stayed out of print until 1966 when it appeared as part of the Oxford University Press four-colume collection of Synge's work. This edition was published in 1980 and includes two introductory essays, an index, and about fifty photographs. The essays give us an insight into Synge's experiences among irish country people which helps us understand his writings on peasant life. They also show us the importance of In Wicklow, West Kerry & Connemara as the source material for Synge's plays.
