In The Ninth House explores the minute and at times magical detail of life. It is the detail that draws the reader out into the garden, up into the branches of a tree or onto the garden wall where: a brown blackbird / crouches at dawn... As light begins/ to brighten,/ it slips into the pages/ of my notebook. We are invited into the writer's inner life. Many of these poems are personal, where the author resurrects ghosts from an earlier life and travels with them. But as poet Anne Stevenson says of the poems, 'they are personal in a good way'.

Travel, implied in the Ninth House - an astrological term - is everywhere in the collection. From Sappho's Greek island to the island of Inis Meain, from the lakeside summer cottage in Finland to a mountainous landscape of Bhutan, from Goya's Andalucia to Van Gogh's Arles. In 'The Binder's Notes' and 'Musée du Moyen Age Tapestries' we gain new perspectives on places both ordinary and strange.
