Illustrating the Past celebrates the many discoveries made during archaeological investigations in advance of the construction of national roads over the last 15 years.

It does so in a most visually impressive way, through the use of art that seeks to interpret and enliven the fragmentary remains and tantalising physical clues which have survived the passagte of many centuries and much alteration to the Irish landscape. Some of the most significant archaeological discoveries in recent times feature within this selection of reconstruction images.

These findings have been revelatory in many cases, altering our understanding of nearly every period of the country's history to some extent.

The illustrationsreveal the richness and variety of life in Ireland from the time of the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to just before the Great Famine. Sites dating from the Branze Age and early medieval period predominate, however, reflecting their preponderance among the hundreds of excavations that have taken place on the national road network.

The illustrations chosen for this book were skilfully executed in a range of media and present the excavation record in a novel way that carries an explanatory force impossible to emulate in any technical report. These renderings of past scenes are the thoughtful culmination of the artists' and excavators' interpretative collaborations, not mere conjecture. They reflect the limits of the excavated evidence but also seek to imaginatively extend it in a meaningful and plausible fashion.
