'Most of the properties described in the main text of this book are the central houses of country estates of varying dimensions. In the general run of things, they are not what would be described as great houses, and would have been built by gentlemen with what used to be known as a comfortable income. With some notable exceptions like Summerhill, Rosmead, Emo Park, and Iveagh House in Dublin, their occupants were fairly ordinary people: men and women who would only surface in official records if something went terribly wrong. For most of them, involvement with the Incumbered Estates Commission, or its successor bodies, was probably the realization of their worst nightmare. Until quite recently, debt and bankruptcy were not socially acceptable, and the new paupers tended to be ostracized by the social circle to which they had belonged...' Mary Cecelia Lyons
