The Art of Crafting in Ireland

The Craft Council of Ireland and Craft Northern Ireland designated 2011 the Year of Craft and organised a twelve-month nationwide programme of craft-related events. This highlighted and increased the interest in crafts already in existence, especially in the current economic climate which has fuelled enthusiasm to make/bake/sew/grow-your-own.

Hands On focuses on 45 eclectic, contemporary and traditional crafts and skills, all practiced and taught across the island of Ireland. Drystone walling, hat making, bee keeping, pottery, thatching, cider & wine making, knitting, quilting, leather work, wallpaper conservation - it's all there and more! Each piece includes information on the history of the particular craft/skill, where and from whom you can learn, as well as the resources you'll need. Each piece is accompanied with images. The book also includes photographs from a variety of craft exhibitions and events from the Year of Craft.

The Craft Council of Ireland and The Heritage Council also contribute prose pieces on the history of learning crafts in Ireland and other related themes. Hands On provides information on craft trails, schools and markets, craft guilds and resource providers.

This is the first book of its kind, giving wonderful exposure to Irish crafts as well as the craftspeople responsible for them.
