'The genealogies and annals are primary sources for the study of Irish Names over a period of more than a thousand years, and many of my observations are based on collections made from these sources. Particular mention must be made of the late M.A, O'Brien's Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae, which is of immense value for the period down to the twelfth century, and og the Rhys Memorial Lecture which he delivered to the British Academy in 1957, the notes for which were edited and published in Celtica X by Rolf Baumgarten who thus made available to scholars O'Brien's valuable observations on the typology and morphology of early Irish personal names. It will be obvious from the following pages that I have used both these works extensively.' Brian Ó Cuív (from his introduction in the book)
