Tarquin Blake documents what is left of fifty Irish mansion houses with brief histories and beautiful photographs of the haunting ruins.

This exquisite coffee table book tells the story of fifty of Ireland's abandoned mansions. These Irish country houses had flourished since the eighteenth century with landowners earning a generous income from their tenants. But their demise began during the Great Famine when the tenants were unable to pay these rents. Later the land reforms resulted with many of the lands being transferred to the farmers.

The houses were also targets of the IRA during the War of Independence and many were set on fire. Others became impossible to maintain and were abandoned. Brief histories including details from the 1911 census, coupled by haunting photography, make this an informative glimpse into the closing days of Irish aristocracy and a time gone by.

This period of stunning architecture and elegance is evoked in high-definition photography, providing a glimpse into what were once some of Ireland's most distinguished homes.
